is blogging vain?

i just started thinking right now, because i remember seeing earlier today on tv that in some asian country (sorry i cant remember which) they have the highest concentration of food blogs/bloggers (people who's entire blogs are about food and restaurants), and i thought to myself... what does america have the highest concentration of, as far as blog content? (cuz i was doing that "next blog" thing) and each blog was "so and so's life journey" "my random ramblings" "me" "so and so's path to becoming a porn star" whatever! point being... they were all pretty self centered blogs... and i got to thinking... is it vain that all we wanna write about is ourselves and anything that has to do with US? i also am guilty of this on my blog... so im not trying to point fingers or anything or try and make a movement for "selfless blogging"... i was just wondering out loud... and for a split second i thought... i should start a new blog like "chronicles of Jason Ziegfried (a random man)" and just really blog about somebody OTHER than myself or post things that have nothing to do w/me or what i like or what i dont or any of that... hmmmmm... interesting right?

i mean... is it, in the end, to our benefit that we like to write/share/blog about our selves and our life conquests? or are we using our right to free speech to stroke our ego's? lolz... i dunno...

end of random thought process.

  1. LOL I agree--there's definitely a sort of self-centeredness in having a blog--but you're not forcing anyone to read it. If people are interested, they'll read, if they aren't, they won't. It's a lot like just having an online journal--ours just happen to be about fashion, others' happen to be about food. Either way, it's a personal expression, therefore it's always going to be at least a little self-centered.

lalalaaaaaaaa you're tooooooo deep for me Iza! lol jk! Great post. :)

  4. You definitely have to be a bit narcissistic these days to run a blog. A lot of them are about ME ME ME! I thought about doing a food and bar blog, but I don't go out enough and yeah I'm broke lol So there's a no go on that! It was actually my roommates idea.

oooh late night thinking. ;) I like it!

  5. To a certain degree, blogging is slighty self-centered, but I agree with Allison, if your not forcing anyone to read it I don't see it as being vain. You're simply voicing your thoughts on the World Wide Web, and if people like it I say great! If they don't, who gives a flying frig!

LOL I love ya blog Iza, very thought provoking ;D

  6. thanks for all the feedback sweet peas! it was just really late & one of those things that sumtimes runs through ur mind... i just got lucky and caught the thought and actually wrote it down this time ;)

u guys are right though... blogging IS an activity to promote and share yourself with willing participants and theres nothing wrong with that, to be honest the only time i ever really feel vain is when i make videos... cuz im not just subjecting u guys to my thoughts and opinions u gotta watch my freaky mug at the same time! hahahahahaha

  8. girl ... i felt like this after 2 months of blogging. the truth is ... it is vain. lol. i just try not to take it toooo seriously. and enjoy the new friends ive made and just enjoy fashion and realize its not all of me. i know theres more to life and i abide by this rule in a day to day basis. blogging to me is like eating lechon u know ... u know its good, but too much of it, ull get a stroke. but when u do eat it in moderation ... man ... its gooood.

    lol.

  9. It is self-centred but like Allison said, it's like a personal journal. So it is all about me, me, me, me!

  12. Great question! But honestly, I am vain. It's my favorite of the seven deadly sins. However, I also think our vanity can do some good, as I see with my own blog. Whenever I write about my struggles, it's great when someone can say, "hey you really helped me with this issue I was dealing with too." We are a little self-absorbed, but think about it, if we hadn't been, we wouldn't have been able to share jokes via twitter. Now would we?

  13. I am a little vain, but blog is kinda of self-centered but for me it was mostly because I kinda wanted it to be about all the things that are interesting to me. Weightloss, fashion, cooking, med school, etc.. I don't think I could start a blog on one subject and be faithful to it for a long time...

  15. I think vanity is a natural & healthy characteristic, its when you take it to the ultra vain level that I am out. When I initially started blogging, i did not intend to post pics of me or outfits. But as I read other blogs, it seemed clear to me that blogs with personal pics & ootds were most popular and that's what ppl liked. It not only about being vain, but about other ppl being voyeurs. If you think about it nowadays the most popular shows are reality shows. I think more than ppl being vain, "we" like to see what other ppl are doing, eating or wearing. SO you should not feel bad about "YOUR" blog being about "YOU". If someone likes it they will follow/read, if they don't then they won't! I honestly agree with Allison, its for fun and don't think about it too hard, cuz in the end I blog for fun and as a hobby. Not hurting any one or my self. OK my rant over! LOL

  16. There's nothing wrong with self love especially when it comes to us :) we're just sharing and expressing our thoughts on stuff we're into and people who are into the same stuff read our blogs. That's not so vain- and if vanity is what promotes so many real girl bloggers for inspiration- I totally support it!
